A new toothless pterosaur (Pterodactyloidea) from Southern Brazil with insights into the paleoecology of a Cretaceous desert Anais da ABC (AABC)
KELLNER,ALEXANDER W.A.; WEINSCHÜTZ,LUIZ C.; HOLGADO,BORJA; BANTIM,RENAN A.M.; SAYÃO,JULIANA M..
Abstract Abstract: The first pterosaur bone bed from Brazil was reported in 2014 at the outskirts of the town Cruzeiro do Oeste, Paraná State, in the Southern region of the country. Here named 'cemitério dos pterossauros' site, these outcrops were referred to the Goio-Erê Formation (Turonian-Campanian) of the Caiuá Group (Bauru Basin) and revealed the presence of hundreds of isolated or partially articulated elements of the tapejarine pterosaur Caiuajara and fewer amounts of a theropod dinosaur. Here we present a new tapejaromorph flying reptile from this site, Keresdrakon vilsoni gen. et sp. nov., which shows a unique blunt ridge on the dorsal surface of the posterior end of the dentary. Morphological and osteohistological features indicate that all...

A NOVEL RAISIN SEGMENTATION ALGORITHM BASED ON DEEP LEARNING AND MORPHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS REA
Zhao,Yun; Guindo,Mahamed L.; Xu,Xing; Shi,Xiang; Sun,Miao; He,Yong.
ABSTRACT We propose a segmentation algorithm for raisin extraction. The proposed approach consists of the following aspects. Deep learning is used to predict the number of raisins in each connected region, and the shape features such as the roundness, area, X-axis value for the centroid, Y-axis value for the centroid, axis length and perimeter of each region will be used to establish the prediction model. Morphological analysis, based on edge parameters including the polar axis, polar angle and angular velocity, is applied to search for the suitable break points that are useful for identifying the dividing lines between two adjacent raisins. To make our segmentation more accurate, some machine-learning algorithms such as the random forest (RF), support...

A Novel Run-length based wavelet features for Screening Thyroid Nodule Malignancy BABT
Haji,Salih Omer; Yousif,Raghad Zuhair.
Abstract: Thyroid nodules are cell growths in the thyroid which might be for in one of two categories benign or malignant. Nodular thyroid disease is common and because of the associated risk of malignancy and hyper-function; these nodules have to be examined thoroughly. Hence diagnosing thyroid nodule malignancy in the early stage can mitigate the possibility of death. This paper presents an intelligent thyroid nodules malignancy diagnosis using texture information in run-length matrix derived from 2- level 2D wavelet transform bands (approximation and details). In this work, ANOVA test has been used to for feature selection to reduce for feature selection about 45 run-length features with and without wavelet generated, before feeding those features which...

Globally, vibrios represent an important and well-established group of bacterial foodborne pathogens. The European Commission (EC) mandated the Comite de European Normalisation (CEN) to undertake work to provide validation data for 15 methods in microbiology to support EC legislation. As part of this mandated work programme, merging of ISO/TS 21872–1:2007, which specifies a horizontal method for the detection of V. parahaemolyticus and V. cholerae, and ISO/TS 21872–2:2007, a similar horizontal method for the detection of potentially pathogenic vibrios other than V. cholerae and V. parahaemolyticus) was proposed. Both parts of ISO/TS 21872 utilized classical culture-based isolation techniques coupled with biochemical confirmation steps. The work also...

Anticipating future changes in marine social‐ecological systems (MSES) several decades into the future is essential in the context of accelerating global change. This is challenging in situations where actors do not share common understandings, practices, or visions about the future. We introduce a dedicated scenario method for the development of MSES scenarios in a participatory context. The objective is to allow different actors to jointly develop scenarios which contain their multiple visions of the future. The method starts from four perspectives: “fisheries management,” “ecosystem,” “ocean climate,” and “global context and governance” for which current status and recent trends are summarized. Contrasted scenarios about possible futures are elaborated...

A phylogenetic investigation of the Neotropical genus Alphamenes van der Vecht, 1977 (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Eumeninae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Oliveira,Letícia A. de; Inez,Tiago G.; Ferreira,Wellington D.; Hermes,Marcel G..
ABSTRACT Advances in potter wasp systematics have been achieved recently, with classificatory changes resulting from analyses based upon large scale molecular datasets. For the Neotropics, recent hypotheses point to the occurrence of an exclusive clade recognized within the tribe Eumenini. In this group, several contributions regarding taxonomy and systematics have been proposed in the last five years, including the genus Alphamenes. This taxon contains seven described species whose distribution is exclusively Neotropical. Females are morphologically homogeneous, and characters related to copulatory organs are useful in male diagnosis. This contribution forms the first phylogenetic approach to include all species of Alphamenes, hence the first to strongly...

A Physiologically Structured Equation to Consider Quota Heterogeneity in the Droop Model ArchiMer
Mairet, Francis; Baron, Regis.
The Droop model allows to represent microalgae growth limited by a nutrient, using a cell quota (also referred to as variable-yield) approach. Single-cell measurements have revealed quota heterogeneity in phytoplankton collected from field studies. Such heterogeneity can be due, among other factors, to spatial structure (e.g. in biogeochemical cycles in the ocean, or for photobioreactors connected in series). Nonetheless, quota heterogeneity is generally omitted in modelling studies, using an average quota approach, or included in size-structured or individual-based models. Here, we propose a distributed Droop equation to tackle this problem, considering subpopulation growth -in line with Droop macroscopic view- rather than cell division dynamics. We...

A predictive index based on environmental filters for the bioassessment of river basins without reference areas in Atlantic Forest biome, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Souza,Natália Freitas de; Baptista,Darcílio Fernandes; Buss,Daniel Forsin.
Abstract: Biological assessments that use the reference condition approach are based on the concept of comparing a site's observed biology to sites where disturbance is minimal or absent. However, in many regions of the world, such areas are scarce or nonexistent. In this study, an alternative approach proposed by Chessman and Royal for bioassessment without reference areas based on environmental filters was tested in Brazil. This approach assumes that key environmental features act in the selection of potential colonists, from a regional pool of taxa, based on the ecological traits (tolerances) possessed by each taxon. We developed the approach by: 1) determining the regional pool, based on a large Atlantic Forest biome database; 2) selecting...

A predictive multimetric index based on macroinvetebrates for Atlantic Forest wadeable streams assessment Biota Neotropica
Oliveira,Renata Bley da Silveira de; Mugnai,Riccardo; Pereira,Priscilla da Silva; Souza,Natália Freitas de; Baptista,Darcílio Fernandes.
Abstract: Multimetric Indices (MMIs) have been widely applied for ecological assessment in freshwater ecosystems. Most MMIs face difficulties when scaling up from small spatial scales because larger scales usually encompass great environmental variability. Covariance of anthropogenic pressures with natural environmental gradients can be a confounding factor in assessing biologic responses to anthropogenic pressures. This study presents the development and validation of a predictive multimetric index to assess the ecological condition of Atlantic Forest wadeable streams using benthic macroinvertebrates. To do so, we sampled 158 sites for the index development. We adjusted each biological metric to natural variation through multiple regression analyses...

A preliminary overview of the Brazilian Apioninae (Coleoptera: Brentidae) with an illustrated key for genera, and a checklist with distribution information Biota Neotropica
de Sousa,Wesley Oliveira; Ribeiro-Costa,Cibele Stramare; Rosado-Neto,Germano Henrique.
Abstract: Here we examine the taxonomic diversity of the Brazilian Apioninae (Coleoptera: Brentidae) and provide an update based on the literature and through examination of material in primary Brazilian collections. Ten genera and 89 species are valid and we include 30 (25 genera, 5 species) new distribution records. Chrysapion Kissinger, 1968 is first reported in Brazil, restricted to the northeast. Ranges now include the Amazon (three genera and one subgenus) and Atlantic (four genera and one subgenus) forests, the Pantanal (five genera) and Cerrado (three genera). The ranges of several genera now include more than one new biome. An identification key (including images of adults and illustrations of male genitalia) also includes the 10 Brazilian genera...

A process‐based model supports an association between dispersal and the prevalence of species traits in tropical reef fish assemblages ArchiMer

Habitat dynamics interacting with species dispersal abilities could generate gradients in species diversity and prevalence of species traits when the latter are associated with species dispersal potential. Using a process‐based model of diversification constrained by a dispersal parameter, we simulated the interplay between reef habitat dynamics during the past 140 million years and dispersal, shaping lineage diversification history and assemblage composition globally. The emerging patterns from the simulations were compared to current prevalence of species traits related to dispersal for 6315 tropical reef fish species. We found a significant spatial congruence between the prevalence of simulated low dispersal values and areas with a large proportion of...
